The doors of the first Bless a Child Foundation Home (Akiba) were opened in March 2010 in Kampala. The home was opened in response to the need for accommodation for the children who are undergoing treatment for cancer at the main referral hospital in the capital city Kampala. Each child is admitted to the home together with a care-giver. The people admitted to the homes usually come from far away and they have nowhere to live in the city.
The BCF Homes provides a safe, clean, and hygienic environment where the children and their care-givers receive accommodation services, a comfortable bed to sleep in, daily nutritious meals, physical care, play therapy, and recreational facilities. All these services are provided to the children and their care-givers at no cost. The BCF Homes lighten the burden of cancer on families of paediatric patients, especially those who come from the rural areas of Uganda and those that come from outside of the country.
The BCF Homes have become a home away from home for children and their care-givers who live far from the treatment facilities by minimizing the costs of transportation to and from upcountry during out-patient treatment cycles.
The Homes also reduce on the cases of treatment abandonment or missing and treatment appointments doctors’ reviews.
For advanced and long-term cases, we work alongside other partner organisations that provide comprehensive palliative care services. These critical partnerships enable us to provide holistic support to children with cancer in Uganda.
We recently opened a second care home (Grace) in Mbarara district, 268 kilometers from the capital city Kampala. The home cares for families seeking cancer treatment from Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
Early 2021 saw the opening of a second Kampala Home (Mikisa) in Makerere West just 0.7km from the original home.
